I have recently gotten into a new ministry area. Volunteer police chaplaincy. The PD in my city employs a full-time chaplain, who then takes volunteers from among area clergy to assist. Let me tell you, it’s an exciting and opportunity-rich enterprise. If you can make the time and are willing to step out of your comfort zone, I highly recommend it.
It offers the chance to interact with people with whom you wouldn’t normally. Police work is some of the most grueling work in the world. These men and women need the Word of God and a solid pastor to bring it to them. But there are also the ones among whom the police work. Police chaplaincy really gets you out among those less fortunate than yourself. You are able to see how the other half live, and you can bring the Gospel to them as well.
If you’re not squeamish, if you don’t mind getting a little bit dirty, look into it in your own city or county. It’s not necessarily easy work, but it’s certainly an important ministry in which you may be able to play a part.
